Parking might seem like a simple task. However, improper parking can lead to fines, inconvenience, or even accidents. Here’s a guide to help park safely while staying within Australian parking laws.
1. Understanding Parking Signs & Rules
As they can be tricky, always read the entire sign before parking. Common signs include:
- No Stopping: You cannot stop your vehicle here under any circumstances.
- No Parking: You must not park your vehicle here. However, you may stop temporarily to load or unload passengers, within two minutes.
- Permit Zones: Only vehicles with a valid permit can park.
- Timed Parking: You must move your vehicle before the time limit expires.
Each state and territory have variations, so always check local council websites for specific rules.
2. Parallel Parking Tips
Parallel parking can be challenging, especially in busy areas. Follow these steps for a smooth park:
- Signal and check for oncoming traffic.
- Align your car next to the vehicle in front of the empty space.
- Reverse carefully while turning your wheel.
- Adjust your position to be within the marked lines and close to the kerb (but not touching it).
- In NSW, QLD, and VIC, you must park facing the direction of traffic.
3. Angle Parking
- Always enter the space at the correct angle (usually 45 or 60 degrees).
- Reverse parking is required in some areas—check for signs.
- Make sure your vehicle is within the lines and not blocking other cars.
4. Residential & Street Parking
- Always check for resident-only parking zones.
- Do not block driveways or fire hydrants.
- Be mindful of bin collection days when parking on the street.
- Some streets have alternate side parking rules—always read the signs.
5. Clearways
A Clearway is a length of road indicated by a sign(s) on which stopping and/or parking are restricted during times of peak traffic use. The operating hours are indicated on signs at the start of and in the Clearway. You must not stop on a Clearway, including setting down or picking up passengers, during the operating hours. Buses are exempt.
6. Disability Parking Permits
- Only vehicles with a valid Australian Disability Parking Permit (ADPP) can use designated accessible spaces. Misuse of a disability permit can result in hefty fines.
- In some states, permit holders may park for extended periods in regular timed zones.
7. Some Common reasons for Parking Fines
- Parking in a loading zone without a commercial vehicle permit.
- Overstaying the allowed time in a timed parking area.
- Parking in a bus or taxi zone.
- Parking too close to an intersection (usually within 10 metres).
- Ignoring clearway restrictions (especially during peak hours).
8. Parking Near Schools & Pedestrian Areas
- Drop-off zones typically have strict time limits (e.g., 2-minute limits in school zones).
- Never double-park—it’s dangerous and illegal.
- Be mindful of crossing areas and give way to pedestrians.
9. Parking & Towing Laws
If your vehicle is towed due to illegal parking:
- Contact the local council or transport authority to locate your vehicle.
- Be prepared to pay towing and storage fees, which vary by state.
